Cigarettes can have a strong smell, and whether you’re the person smoking or you’re trying to get the smell out from a previous tenant, there are things that you can do.

It’s not going to be an easy task, and much of it comes down to how long the cigarette smoke has been allowed to linger. Before you do anything drastic, there are a few tricks that you can try.

Start with these tips: Open windows to air out the rooms.

  • Buy an air purifier and run it for a few days.
  • Create an air freshener out of essential oils and spritz it around the house.

Now, certain surfaces require extra attention.

Carpeting

Sprinkle baking soda onto carpets and rugs and let it sit for at least 10 minutes. Then, vacuum. The baking soda will help to neutralize the odors.

Walls

Smoking in the house can not only cause the walls to smell but also leave a yellowish hue on them. You can get rid of both with an all-purpose cleaner and a rag. Wipe down the walls. Then, use a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water to wipe down the walls a second time.

Upholstered Furniture

When you have upholstered furniture, removing the smell of cigarette smoke can be extremely difficult. If you can remove certain components to wash them (like cushion covers), it’s highly recommended. You may also want to rent a commercial shampooer to help with the process – or hire a professional to do the cleaning for you.

Unfortunately, the smell of cigarettes can linger. Once you’ve done everything you can, it may be necessary to hire professionals to clean and even repaint walls.
